MUSSOORIE


A beautiful hill station situated in Dehradun district in Uttarakhand in north India is Mussoorie. No doubt it is called Queen of the hills. Mussoorie is situated at the foothills of Garhwal range of Himalayas. Mussoorie is about 35 km or one hour drive from Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand. Mussoorie is at a height of about 6100 feet.

Kempty falls located at about 13 km from Mussoorie is a great attraction for tourists.There is a boat club in its proximity. Another picnic spot of water falls are Jharipani falls on Mussoorie Jharipani road. Mussoorie lake is another place ideal for boating.It is an artificial lake on Dehradun Mussoorie road. The highest peak at Mussoorie is Lal Tibba, which presents a panoramic view of the Himalayas. The second highest peak is Gun Hill, close to Mall road-the main shopping road. There is a rope way which takes you to Gun Hill. There is a municipal garden full of various trees,plants and flowers at the top of the mountain.

Mussoorie is also famous for Lal Bahadur Shastri Academy of Administration for imparting training to Indian Administrative Service and Indian Police Service officers. Indo Tibetan Border  Police Force Academy is also located here.

 The nearest airport for Mussoorie is Jolly Grant in Dehradun. Mussoorie is about 6 and 1/2 hours from Delhi by road.

There are two Hindu religious places close to Mussoorie. Rishikesh is about 2 hours by road from Mussoorie. It is one of the holiest place for Hindu pilgrims. It is famous for Lakshman Jhula, a bridge which crosses the river Ganga. Rishikesh is thus closely linked to Ramayana. Besides there are many other temples here.

Another Hindu religious place close to Mussoorie is Haridwar. It takes about 2 and 1/2 hours to reach Haridwar by road from Mussoorie. Haridwar is famous for Kumbh Mela. Here,Hindus take holy bath in the Ganga river to wash their sins.Char dham yatra to four pilgrimage centres in Uttarakhand viz. Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri starts from Haridwar.

Mussoorie is a great place to stay throughout the year.Winters are very chilly with snowfalls. Summers are pleasant.
